The Slate House

  • Location: Lutherville, MD
  • Specs: new 2-story, 7,000 SF residence
  • Partners: Ziger/Snead Architects, Blackhorse Construction,

When a fire destroyed the original ranch-style house at this Lutherville, MD location, Morabito Consultants was able to partner with Ziger/Snead Architects to create a new 7,000 SF residence for the homeowner. While the primary living space is on the main floor, the new design added a second floor with three guest bedrooms and a media room. A raised terrace and swimming pool are located off the main level family room and kitchen.

Unique to this project was the architect’s desire to have the second floor framing cantilever past the exterior wall below while supporting a massive 22’ x 21’ window. MC provided a structural steel moment frame shaped like an A-frame to house the window. The steel A-frame sits on structural steel cantilevered beams.

Known as the “Slate House,” this architecturally remarkable home was featured in publications including Dezenn (08/2018), HomeAdore (07/2018), and Dwell (07/2018)
