Baltimore City Community College Gymnasium | July 16, 2024

The construction at the Baltimore City Community College Gymnasium building has reached completion. Morabito Consultants has undertaken key roles as the structural engineer of record, shoring design engineer, and formwork design engineer for this concrete restoration project.

The gymnasium’s front and rear elevations feature reinforced concrete arched strut-columns, which had sustained significant damage due to external conditions and prolonged water exposure. Their swale-like profile had functioned as a gutter, directing water from the roof to the eave and then to the below-grade storm drain system.

The project scope included selective demolition of each strut-column and the design of specialized steel shoring to support those columns requiring extensive demolition. Repair procedures involved installing new rebar and concrete, eliminating the swale from the strut profile, and developing a new gutter system to transport water directly from the roof to the storm drain.

Morabito Consultants takes pride in collaborating with Baltimore City Community College on this distinctive project and anticipates future remediation endeavors on campus.
