Two weeks ago, the structural steel framing was starting to be placed over S. Newkirk Street for the bridge connecting a new and existing GAF distribution warehouse in Baltimore City.  The new bridge truss is composed of WF and HSS members to support the roof, floor, and walls of the bridge.  Over the past couple weeks, the steel columns and trusses, and the metal floor and roof deck have been installed.  Light gauge wall framing is currently underway.   Once completed, the bridge will support two conveyors and be wide enough to accommodate three aisles for personnel.  MC is proud to have partnered with Urban Design Group, B&R, Kimley-Horn, and Chesapeake Contracting Group on this project.

Morabito Consultants would like to wish our associates and colleagues a happy and safe Independence Day weekend.  In observance of the holiday, MC will be closed on Monday, July 4th, and will resume with regular business hours on Tuesday, July 5th.

For International Women in Engineering Day, MC would like to raise awareness to the importance of introducing engineering to girls at a young age.  By introducing engineering early on, we can instill a passion for STEM careers within the future generations to come.  A great way to accomplish this is by encouraging girls to get involved in STEM activities.  Now that school is out, STEM projects and activities will also keep their minds working throughout the summer, while still having fun.  Check out these links from DiscoverE and Left Brain Craft Brain to find different activities you can do with the future engineers in your life.

MC would like to wish a Happy Father’s Day weekend to all dads.  Thank you for showing us what it looks like to be responsible, dedicated, and hardworking.

Framing is nearing completion at 601 S. Broadway! MC is proud to partner with SETO Architects on this major renovation in the heart of Fells Point transforming four connected structures at the corner of S. Broadway and Fleet Street into new apartments above commercial space that will add three stories to the existing structure. This project serves to honor the existing building’s history by preserving and restoring the historical features while seamlessly transitioning into a new vertical addition and renovations.

Some engineering humor to help get you through the mid-week slump!

Construction at Brightview Eatontown is well underway!  The three story, 194,000 square foot structure contains a mixture of independent living, assisted living, and memory care, totaling 177 senior living apartments.  Amenities units include a theater, pub, gym, and salon among others.

This building is split into two separate structures with an expansion joint and firewall between them.  On one side, the building is constructed with light gauge metal stud walls, Ecospan composite floor joists, and pre-engineered wood roof trusses.  The opposite side is constructed with wood stud walls and pre-engineered wood floor and roof Trusses.

MC is proud to be partnered with Hord Coplan Macht and Brightview Senior Living and look forward to watching the construction progress!

MC would like to wish our associates and colleagues a happy Memorial Day weekend and urge everyone to take time to remember what this upcoming Monday is truly about. To the men and women who gave their lives protecting our freedom: We are forever in your debt. We thank you. We proudly remember you.

Red hot klinker cooling on a conveyor

MC previously discussed climate change and how “carbonation” of concrete provides some offset to CO2 emissions produced by the manufacture of concrete. It is estimated that between 5-8% of all global CO2 emissions come from the manufacturer of cement products which are used in concrete, mortar, grout, cement sheathing, and numerous other applications. The most energy intensive process in the manufacturing of cement is the creation of a precursor material to hydraulic cement powder (Portland, etc) called “klinker” which is the hot fusing of oxidized calcium and silicone, in various proportions, into rock-like nodules. In this video from the American Concrete Institute, global cement manufacturer, HolcimUS, explains the klinker manufacturing process and discusses the strategies they are implementing for reducing CO2 emissions at cement manufacturing facilities and to eventually achieving net zero carbon in buildings.
