Yesterday, the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Talbott Springs Elementary School rang in the 2022 school year in Howard County, MD. MC is proud to have served as structural engineer of record for this two-story, 88,000 SF replacement school. This state-of-the-art facility is steel framed with conventional spread footing foundations and was designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification. We want to wish the students and staff a safe and exciting school year as they begin classes in their new school today. MC shares a special connection to this school as Tony Morabito, P.E., oversaw the project as Principal in Charge, while Tony’s son, Nick Morabito, P.E. served as MC’s Senior Project Manager, and Tony’s daughter, Christina Mizia will be the school’s new Reading Specialist. Tony is ecstatic that his daughter will get to work at this new facility for many years to come. Kudos to the design team of TCA Architects, James Posey Associates, Fisher, Collins, & Carter, Inc., and to the construction manager, Dustin Construction, Inc. for a job well done!

Construction is underway at the Broadview Senior Living Center at Purchase College, New York.  This project consists of two, four-level independent living buildings, a two-story assisted living/memory care building and a commons building.  MC is happy to be working alongside LCS Development, Hord, Coplan, Macht, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Company on this project.

MC had the pleasure of working alongside Ziger|Snead Architects on the renovation of Baltimore Unity Hall in the Bolton Hill community.  This space serves as a center for arts, education, and training to bring unity within the surrounding communities.  Baltimore Unity Hall officially opened in June; check out this article to read about the ribbon cutting ceremony.

2022 is already half over and MC has had the pleasure of partnering on five of the Maryland projects that have already received LEED certification! Mother Mary Lange Catholic School and Liberty Exchange D2 received Gold Certification in January. February brought, Waugh Chapel 4 a Gold Certification and in May, Maple Lawn 7 received Gold Certification and Rock Creek School in Walkersville received Silver Certification.

MC is looking forward to seeing more of our projects receive LEED certification throughout the remainder of the year and for years to come.  To learn more about how the LEED Certification rating system, check out the USGBC’s website.

Two weeks ago, the structural steel framing was starting to be placed over S. Newkirk Street for the bridge connecting a new and existing GAF distribution warehouse in Baltimore City.  The new bridge truss is composed of WF and HSS members to support the roof, floor, and walls of the bridge.  Over the past couple weeks, the steel columns and trusses, and the metal floor and roof deck have been installed.  Light gauge wall framing is currently underway.   Once completed, the bridge will support two conveyors and be wide enough to accommodate three aisles for personnel.  MC is proud to have partnered with Urban Design Group, B&R, Kimley-Horn, and Chesapeake Contracting Group on this project.

Morabito Consultants would like to wish our associates and colleagues a happy and safe Independence Day weekend.  In observance of the holiday, MC will be closed on Monday, July 4th, and will resume with regular business hours on Tuesday, July 5th.

For International Women in Engineering Day, MC would like to raise awareness to the importance of introducing engineering to girls at a young age.  By introducing engineering early on, we can instill a passion for STEM careers within the future generations to come.  A great way to accomplish this is by encouraging girls to get involved in STEM activities.  Now that school is out, STEM projects and activities will also keep their minds working throughout the summer, while still having fun.  Check out these links from DiscoverE and Left Brain Craft Brain to find different activities you can do with the future engineers in your life.

MC would like to wish a Happy Father’s Day weekend to all dads.  Thank you for showing us what it looks like to be responsible, dedicated, and hardworking.

Framing is nearing completion at 601 S. Broadway! MC is proud to partner with SETO Architects on this major renovation in the heart of Fells Point transforming four connected structures at the corner of S. Broadway and Fleet Street into new apartments above commercial space that will add three stories to the existing structure. This project serves to honor the existing building’s history by preserving and restoring the historical features while seamlessly transitioning into a new vertical addition and renovations.

Some engineering humor to help get you through the mid-week slump!
