Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering services for the Maryland Science Center expansion and renovation in Baltimore, Maryland. The project included a 43,000-square-foot expansion and 36,000-square-foot renovation designed to improve circulation, strengthen the visitor experience, and support new exhibit spaces within one of Baltimore’s landmark cultural and educational destinations.
A major component of the work was a new 7,000-square-foot enclosed lobby atrium, creating a bright, welcoming entry sequence and a stronger connection between the museum’s existing galleries and new exhibit areas. Inside the existing facility, the renovation of Dino Hall required an innovative structural engineering solution to create a 100-foot clear span using wide-flange steel trusses in a box configuration without lateral bracing, allowing the exhibit hall to remain column-free and flexible for museum programming.
The design also incorporated expansive 40-foot-tall windows, providing clear views into the new exhibit halls and enhancing the visual connection between interior spaces. This award-winning Baltimore museum project received the 2004 AIA Baltimore Design Award, recognizing its design excellence and contribution to the built environment.
