Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering services for the renovation and expansion of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, a historic former high school building in Annapolis, Maryland. The project transformed the facility into a regional arts destination while preserving its historic character and adapting the structure for modern performance, education, and community programming.
The redevelopment included extensive upgrades to existing theater and public spaces, along with conversion of the former gymnasium into a new community theater. Structural modifications supported theater-specific elements such as a new fly space, orchestra pit, revised balcony seating, and parterre seating areas, improving both performance functionality and audience experience.
New additions were constructed on both sides of the existing stage to support expanded programming needs. These additions include a new lobby, lounge areas, dressing rooms, loading areas, storage, and prop shop space, requiring careful coordination between new structural systems and the existing historic building.
The project also incorporated accessibility and circulation improvements, including raised floor elevations and new vertical access elements integrated within the existing structure. A new courtyard further enhances the campus by providing flexible outdoor space for performances, gatherings, and community engagement.
The completed renovation blends historic preservation with modern performance and community space requirements, resulting in a versatile arts facility that supports theater, education, public programming, and cultural engagement in Annapolis.
