Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering and concrete restoration consulting services for The Battery, the adaptive reuse of the historic Delaware Generating Station along the Delaware River in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood. Originally constructed between 1917 and 1923, the monumental early 20th-century power plant was transformed into a modern mixed-use destination while preserving its industrial character.
The project began with extensive investigation, structural analysis, concrete repair, and restoration of existing structural systems to address deterioration and prepare the long-vacant building for new occupancy. Morabito Consultants evaluated reserve capacity within the existing structure and designed localized repairs, reinforcement, and supplemental framing where required.
The mixed-use redevelopment introduced major structural modifications for special event space, offices, and residential units. Work included new framed floor levels within the existing building, opening infills, new stairs, ramps, elevators, and a vertical expansion of two new levels over portions of the existing roof supported by a transfer-level framing system integrated with the original structure.
Morabito Consultants served as Structural Engineer of Record and concrete restoration consultant, providing services from investigation and design through construction administration. Structural coordination also supported façade restoration, canopy structures, roof framing repairs, and specialized program elements within the Turbine Hall and Boiler House structures.
The Battery has been recognized for excellence in preservation and adaptive reuse, including a 2024 Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance. The project highlights Morabito Consultants’ experience with historic structural rehabilitation, concrete restoration, adaptive reuse engineering, and complex mixed-use redevelopment.
