Sparrows Point Steel Mill Demolition
Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering and demolition support services for multiple industrial facilities at the historic Sparrows Point Integrated Steel Mill in Sparrows Point, Maryland. The work included site investigations, structural assessments, demolition sequencing, and stability evaluations for large-scale steel mill buildings and infrastructure across the former industrial complex.
The project encompassed complex industrial structures, including long-span steel truss buildings, interconnected mill structures, elevated waterfront facilities, and partially deteriorated framing systems. Morabito Consultants evaluated existing structural conditions, identified vulnerabilities, and developed recommendations to support safe demolition operations while maintaining stability of adjacent structures and buildings intended to remain.
A major project highlight involved the controlled demolition of the approximately 300-foot-tall L Blast Furnace, an 11-million-pound industrial structure that had served as a critical component of the former steelmaking operations. Morabito Consultants analyzed the blast furnace to develop a strategic weakening sequence and designed temporary steel support systems to facilitate a safe, controlled implosion.
Additional services included structural evaluation of partially collapsed buildings, including the Cold Mill structure, where Morabito Consultants investigated progressive roof failure and assessed demolition procedures for safety and effectiveness.
Through detailed analysis, field coordination, and demolition engineering expertise, Morabito Consultants supported the safe and efficient removal of major steel mill structures and helped advance the site’s transition for future redevelopment.
