Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering services for the comprehensive renovation and expansion of Mary Fisher Hall, a central student life facility at Goucher College. The project transformed approximately 25,000 square feet of existing cafeteria, bookstore, student activity, and support spaces into a modern dining hall, commercial kitchen, and student counseling center, while adding more than 54,000 square feet of new construction. The renovation required extensive modifications to the existing structure, including the removal and replacement of bearing walls, creation of new mechanical and circulation shafts, and support of reconfigured interior spaces.
The structural design incorporated steel moment frames, composite steel beams, steel bar joists, and cast-in-place reinforced concrete systems to support the new additions and expanded dining facilities. The project also included underpinning of existing foundations, new elevator and stair structures, and coordination of structural solutions for significant architectural and programmatic changes throughout the building. Designed as the college’s primary dining destination, the revitalized facility enhances campus life while seamlessly integrating new construction with the existing campus architecture.
