MICA Brown Center
Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering design services for the MICA Brown Center, a 61,000-square-foot auditorium and academic building at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. The striking facility supports academic, digital art, design, and performance functions while contributing to the campus’s contemporary architectural identity.
The structure is composed of post-tensioned, cast-in-place concrete with an exposed steel-framed atrium and a glass-enclosed exterior. Because the building footprint increases with height, the design required sloped columns and progressively longer cantilevered floor slabs, demanding close coordination between architectural expression, structural stability, and constructability.
The project received multiple industry recognitions, including an American Concrete Institute Excellence in Concrete Award, an AIA Baltimore Grand Design Award, and a Building Congress & Exchange Craftsmanship Award. These honors reflect the project’s successful integration of complex structural systems, exposed concrete construction, and high-impact architectural design.
