Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering design services for the renovation and expansion of Carey Hall, the historic centerpiece of Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland. The project included extensive renovations to the existing 1920s building and construction of major additions that expanded academic, library, arts, dining, and student activity spaces.
Structural design solutions focused on strengthening the existing building for modern educational use while preserving its historic character. Improvements included bonded concrete overlays to reinforce attic floor systems for classroom occupancy, as well as targeted strengthening of existing beams and columns using Gunite applications and carbon fiber reinforcement.
The new additions introduced expanded classrooms, offices, cafeteria and kitchen areas, library and gallery spaces, student activity areas, a woodshop, and a health suite. Structural systems included steel framing, composite floor systems, reinforced masonry walls, and green roof support. The completed project successfully blends historic preservation, sustainable design, and modern academic functionality for Gilman School’s Upper School campus.
