Loyola Blakefield St. Ignatius Hall
Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering design services for St. Ignatius Hall, a state-of-the-art middle school building at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Maryland. The approximately 46,000-square-foot facility supports modern educational programming with a learning commons, classrooms, art studio, music room, maker space, and specialized labs for engineering and cyber science.
The building utilizes a structural steel framing system with composite steel floors supported by wide-flange beams and columns. The roof structure consists of light-gauge metal stud trusses that conceal a recessed mechanical roof well while also supporting the campus’s first vegetated roof and a solar panel array above the learning commons.
Exterior walls are composed of reinforced concrete retaining walls and structural metal stud framing with stone veneer finishes to match the existing campus architecture. The project’s innovative design and construction quality were recognized with the 2021 American Concrete Institute Maryland Chapter Excellence in Concrete Award for low-rise structures.
