Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering services for the Fallston Activity Center, also known as the Veronica “Roni” Chenowith Activity Center, a 45,000-square-foot community recreation facility in Fallston, Maryland.
The center includes a gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, meeting spaces, and a social hall, creating a flexible environment for recreational programming, senior activities, community events, performances, and local organization gatherings.
A key structural feature is the long-span roof system over the gymnasium and commons area, which uses large steel trusses spanning approximately 80 to 90 feet to create open, column-free community spaces. The roof combines a high-pitched tectum deck system over primary gathering areas with low-slope galvanized metal roof decking over adjacent support spaces.
The building envelope consists of brick veneer over metal stud framing, providing durability and architectural consistency throughout the facility. The structural system also incorporates conventional spread footings and masonry shear walls to provide overall stability and long-term performance.
The completed activity center delivers a modern, durable, and versatile community facility that supports recreational programming and public engagement for residents throughout Harford County.
