Morabito Consultants provided structural engineering services for The Slate House, an award-winning custom residence in Lutherville, Maryland, developed with Ziger/Snead Architects after the original home was destroyed by fire. The approximately 7,000-square-foot residence combines contemporary residential architecture with complex structural steel and wood-framed systems.
The design places primary living spaces on the main level and includes a second floor with three guest bedrooms and a media room. A raised terrace and swimming pool extend from the family room and kitchen, strengthening the connection between interior living areas and outdoor spaces.
A defining structural feature is the cantilevered second-floor framing, which extends beyond the exterior wall below to support a large 22-foot by 21-foot window. Morabito Consultants designed a custom structural steel moment frame configured as an A-frame to house the expansive glazing, with the frame supported by structural steel cantilevered beams for strength, stiffness, and architectural openness.
The Slate House has received national recognition and has been featured by Dezeen, HomeAdore, and Dwell for its contemporary design, material expression, and response to the wooded Maryland site.
